All successful business are the same in the method by which they start and successfully run. They all have an individual or group of individuals who have an idea or vision and move forward to manifest it. Putting a business plan to pen and paper is highly suggested, because a written business plan always gives you something to fall back on. If you don’t know how to write one, do your research. There are countless resources that are available for someone who is trying to write a business plan.

If you are needing help writing or developing a business plan you can start by searching on the internet. There are many services that will help you develop, write and understand your business plan. If you don’t have the financial resources to pay someone to help you develop a business plan you can always use free templates that are posted all over the web. If you don’t feel comfortable using the methods above your local book store or library will have published books that can walk you through the process step by step. It is also always a good idea to talk to another successful business person about how they developed and implemented their plan.

Your business plan should include things like:

  • what kind of business am I?

  • Are you a sole proprietor, a LLC or a corporation?

  • Do you need a tax id number?

  • Do you need a sales tax number?

  • Who are the officers in your business?

  • What roles do these officers perform?

  • What are the goals of your business?

  • How do you plan on reaching those goals?

  • What is your mission statement?

Etc. All of these questions need to be answered when putting together your plan.

After writing your plan, stick to it. Give it a chance to work and don’t get discouraged if things don’t go exactly as you planned. You may find obstacles in your path that you did not plan for, or you may find that your scrapbooking business takes a turn that you did not expect, don’t worry! Keep record of changes, obstacles and bumps you hit along the way. Then revise your plan according to what you have learned.

As tedious as it may sound, keeping notes for the specific purpose of revising your business plan can be a lifesaver, especially if you experience any significant growth. As your business grows you may add services, employees and partnerships into the mix.

If you have kept record of your growth and revisions adding different facets to your business will come naturally and easily. You will be able to line item a new part of your business and have it blend perfectly with your plan. If you have not kept good records of your growth pattern and revised your original business plan, there will be no way to efficiently develop a new “spot” for the new service or idea you have to offer.

The “get a plan,” “stick to the plan” and “review and revise the plan” method to starting a business is a tried and true method to success.
